I just moved here from Colorado and so far I love it. The town does have a meth problem, but as long as you lock your doors and windows you should be fine. They aren't violent, they just steal a lot. As far as jobs go, I know that my wife just got a good job at the hospital and there are always openings between there, the casino and the lumber mill depending on what kind of work he wants to do. There is a grocery at every corner of town and food is actually about on par with Denver. Pretty much everything is about the same cost as Denver in all honesty, maybe even cheaper. Housing is tough to find though so make sure he plans ahead and has money to visit for a few days and look at some houses before buying/renting. I personally love it here. I get to live by the beach, I still have access to those beautiful mountains that we coloradoans love and the air isn't so dry that I'm waking up with a sore throat every day (I lived in Pueblo). I do recommend Coos Bay to anyone who can secure employment and housing BEFORE they set the move in stone. Good luck to your son and maybe I'll see him around soon.

I can offer my thoughts, having lived there from infancy until I married and moved away in my 20's. Most of my immediate family is still in the area, and I go back once in awhile. It is hard to get to, and it's somewhat isolated. It takes more than 4 hours to reach the Portland airport, so any real travel is a bear. The town is economically depresses as a result of being so far off the beaten path. Unless you are a skilled blue collar, i.e. logger, fisherman, etc. you won't make much. There is very little to do there unless you are extremely outdoorsy. The restaurants are extremely basic, and housed in old buildings. Shopping is pretty 'meh', there is no real 'mall'. There is a ghost town that used to be 'Pony Village' that was 'okish' when I was a teen, but when I've gone back the shops closed for the most part. The only folks hanging out were wearing velour and perfecting walking as fast as possible. It's pretty awful. I love Colorado, though I know it's pretty harsh. That would be a gross trade, imo.

Stay where he is. Homelessness is increasing daily and public officials tend to ignore the issue. Wages are the lowest in the State. Housing cost among the highest. Gas prices among the highest. Shopping is dismal. Employment opportunities are limited to fast food and service related to tourism. Schools are not the best. If your activities are hunting, fishing, camping and hiking..this location is great. In order words, Coos Bay is a wonderful vacation spot...living here ‘not so much’!
